As televisions become larger and larger (Samsung recently introduced a 146” model, named, appropriately enough, “The Wall”), it has become harder and harder to find good smaller models, say for your kitchen or your Airstream.

Our search for such a model led us to the TCL Roku Smart TV model. 28S305.

The affordable TCL Roku Smart TV has excellent overall image quality and built-in Roku functionality, essentially giving the TV built-in streaming video player functionality.

The Roku smart TV platform offers the user a simple user interface and a large library of streaming apps. While I like the Apple TV interface better, the Roku compensates by being built into the television and not requiring an additional – albeit small – settop box or HDMI connection. It’s possible, of course to add Apple TV to the set if desired.

The good-looking LED-backlighted LCD television weighs very little – a mere seven pounds (3.2 kilograms) – the lack of a picture tube and other heavy components makes a big difference. The cabinet is 25.3” (643 mm) in width, 15.1” (384 mm) in height, and a mere 3.2” (81 mm) in depth, which means it could fit just about anywhere.

By contrast, the 27” cathode-ray tube television of my youth weighed somewhere between 60 to 80 pounds (27 to 36 kilograms), was over a foot (30 centimeters) in depth, hard to find a place for, and really only had a viewable area of 25.5”, measured diagonally.
