Review: Jimmy at the James, SoHo – A Bar That’s Worthy of the View

When you take the elevator up to Jimmy, the informally named rooftop bar at the James New York Soho hotel, and the doors open, you only get a glimpse of what you are in for. Once in the bar area, however, you start to realize that you’ve never seen New York this way in the wintertime. The city sparkles.

Walk out to the pool without wearing a winter coat – it may be the middle of December but it somehow feels warm up on the 18th floor.  “There’s the Brooklyn Bridge,” another guest excitedly exclaims to a friend.  “Look! Is that New Jersey?”  The 360° views have a magical feel – and, for a moment, there’s Santa on the movie screen at the end of the pool.

If the pool isn’t enough – and granted it’s not warm enough for swimming – there’s a roaring blaze in the fireplace inside.  Inside has a mid-century feel: a large leather-trimmed wooden bar paired with a lingham floor and posh blue upholstered seating would make Vladimir Kagen or George Nelson feel at home.

Jimmy offers a full drink menu that includes items such as the Spicy Mexican Chocolate Truffle (Ilegal Mezcal, Tanteo Chipotle Tequila, sea salt dark chocolate, and red Thai chili) and the Jeff Spicoli Special that includes a CBD Gummy Bar, inspired by Ridgemont High’s carefree stoner (the recipe includes Montelobos Mezcal, Montenegro Amaro Pumpkin Butter, and orange bitters).

Is our table too small for what we’ve ordered, we wonder? The question is answered as the waitress pushes another table (the size of small barrel) in our direction without missing a beat.
