DSC_0542 (1)InterContinental Hotels Group, which took a 51% stake in Regent Hotels & Resorts last summer, announced that Regent will become a participant in IHG Rewards starting February 1, 2019.

IHG intends to grow the Regent Hotels brand from six to 40 properties and will reflag the InterContinental Hong Kong as a Regent in 2021, after an extensive refurbishment.

The six current Regent Hotels properties are in Beijing, Berlin, Chongqing, Porto Montenegro, Singapore, and Taipei.

IHG’s acquisition is part of its strategy to create a luxury division and move further upmarket. IHG has the right to acquire remaining shares in Regent in a phased manner starting in 2026.

Regent was founded in 1970 in Taiwan by Robert Burns with Japan’s Tokyo Group. It was acquired by Four Seasons in 1992 and in 1998, Carlson acquired rights to the Regent name for future projects. Carlson then sold Regent to Formosa International Hotels in 2010.
