Powerful Winter Storm Brings Heavy Rain, Snow, Flight Delays to South
A powerful winter storm is bringing snow, sleet, and freezing rain from western Texas to Tennessee, bringing with it dangerous driving conditions and hundreds of flight delays and cancellations.
Parts of Texas saw as much as 2” (5 centimeters) of rain per hour, with heavy downpours near Houston. Flash flood and flood watches are in effect from eastern Texas to Georgia on Saturday.
Airports from Houston to Charlotte are reporting dozens of flight delays and multiple cancellations.
Meanwhile, a wintry mix of snow and sleet is spreading from the Texas Panhandle to northern Arkansas Saturday morning. Moderate to heavy snowfall is expected in the Piedmont region and North Carolina, while southwest Virginia and North Carolina are expecting significant amounts of snow, with some areas set to experience accumulation of over 12” (30 centimeters) of the white stuff.
Some areas of the Georgia mountains could see 6” (15 centimeters) or more of snow.
While the storm will be off shore by Monday, it still continue to produce rain and snow from Virginia to Tennessee and Alabama.
