The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey first approved the project in March 2016. Construction started later that year.

Sections of the current Central Terminal, or Terminal B, are being demolished as sections of replacement building are being completed. The new structure is being built closer to the Grand Central Parkway, a site that was occupied largely by parking facilities.

Once completed, it will feature a central arrivals area and departures hall and be linked airside to Terminal C. The new Central Terminal will feature 35 gates and dual pedestrian bridges that cross over active taxi lanes that connect the main terminal with two midfield concourses.

The Central Terminal is not the only new terminal coming to LaGuardia. Delta is constructing a 37-gate Terminal C, which will replace the current Terminals C and D on the eastern side of the airport. The $4 billion facility is slated to open in 2021.

Finally, construction for the LaGuardia AirTrain is expected to start in 2020 and be completed by 2022. Once in operation, passengers should be able to go from midtown Manhattan to the airport in 30 minutes.
