The restaurants and retail establishments – the list also includes Fusco, a traditional Italian restaurant, and the 5 Boroughs Food Emporium as well as a Duty Free shop – are close to the gates, allowing travelers plenty of time to browse and shop. One passenger already purchased one of the giant giraffes offered by FAO Schwarz and took it home to Canada with her.

Other conveniences we found include an airport-themed children’s play area and restrooms with a package shelf above the sink to keep travelers’ belongings dry.

Upstairs is a new Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge, scheduled to open in the coming week as well as a United Airlines lounge that is under construction.

BOTTOM LINE

While the new concourse is only 9% of the project and only 11 of its 18 gates will be open at first, it represents a major step forward for the airport. Construction of the new terminal building has been taking place while the airport continues to operate at full speed.

“It is hard to build a new airport while you are operating an old airport,” said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo at a ceremony earlier in the week at the facility.
