If you are taking a trip during the upcoming holiday season, you won’t be traveling alone: a record number of travelers is expected to take to the skies to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s.

Figures released by Airlines for America, an industry trade group, predict that 45.7 million passengers will board a plane operated by a U.S. airline during the 18-day holiday travel period. This translates to 2.54 million passengers per day on average, thanks in great part to lower airfares.

“Fares that match nearly every budget have enabled a record number of people take to the skies to visit loved ones, conduct business or enjoy a holiday getaway,” said John Heimlich, chief economist of Airlines for America.

The busiest travel days are expected to be Thursday, December 20; Friday, December 21; and Wednesday, December 26.

The lightest travel days will be Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

To prepare for the crowds, airlines are once again adding more flights, using larger aircraft, and making more employees available to help those traveling.
