DSC_0113United Airlines said late Friday that it plans to add a second daily flight from its New York metro area hub to Shanghai starting in June 2020.

The airline submitted an application to the U.S. Department of Transportation requesting permission to introduce the second flight.

United currently operates morning flight from Newark Liberty International Airport to Shanghai Pudong Airport and the new flight would leave mid afternoon at 3:45 p.m. local time and arrive in Shanghai at 6:40 p.m. the following day. The return flight would leave Shanghai at 10:10 a.m. and arrive in New York at 12:45 p.m. the same day.

The new flight would allow travelers to connect to the new Shanghai flight from over 90 U.S. and Canadian flights.

The airline said that the new flight is in response to a growing demand for travel between the financial centers of both China and the United States.

“If approved, this additional flight will help facilitate the development of increased business and tourism,” said Oscar Munoz, the airline’s CEO.

The Chicago-based carrier is the only airline serving both mainland China and Hong Kong from the New York area.
