Storm Hinders Efforts for Holiday Travelers to Return Home as Blizzard-Like Conditions Are Reported in the Midwest

A small but powerful storm is making travel difficult as the Thanksgiving holiday weekend comes to an end.

Snow will move through the Chicagoland area overnight with blizzard-like conditions developing there and in other parts of the Midwest.  Other cities reporting blizzard-like conditions include Kansas City; Shenandoah, Iowa; and Independence, Missouri.

The blizzard was accompanied by wind gusts reaching 50 mph (80 km/h). Northern Illinois will see 12” (30 centimeters) or more of the white stuff

Expect the storm to move to the I-95 corridor bringing rain to those areas. The rain will change to snow in upstate New York and northern New England Monday night.

In addition, road conditions remain hazardous. The storm caused a 20-vehicle pileup on Interstate 70 near Frisco, Colorado, on Saturday and closed Interstate 80 in southeast Wyoming.

Over 700 flights in and out of Chicago O’Hare International Airport were cancelled on Sunday while an additional 450 were delayed. There were also significant numbers of delayed and cancelled flights at Chicago Midway International, and Kansas City International airports.

Airlines have already proactively cancelled almost 200 flights in and out of Chicago O’Hare on Monday.
