DSC_0366 (1)A video by a blogger in China showing what appears to be unsanitary room cleaning practices at leading hotels caused a maelstrom there and abroad.

The video, which was viewed by this reporter, shows housekeepers using the same towel to wipe coffee cups, glasses, bathroom counters, and sinks, and several housekeepers appear to use the same towel for the toilet as well.

The blogger included 14 hotels in the video, although he told local media that he had visited a total of 30 and his experiences were similar at virtually all.

Multiple hotels including the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund and the Sheraton Guiyang issued statements of apology. The Park Hyatt Beijing called the video an “isolated occurrence” while the Shangri-La Fuzhou said that what the video showed violates its hygiene standards.

Meanwhile, the Chinese tourism ministry said it had called for inspections of the 14 hotels in the video.

Following such an inspection on Friday, the Peninsula Beijing said that authorities had found that it exceeded the city’s cleanliness standards, adding it will nonetheless review current procedures and take steps to strengthen compliance.
