If you’re staying at a Marriott, you may have to cross a picket line to check into the hotel. As of Wednesday, approximately 8,000 employees ranging from bartenders to bellmen to housekeepers at 23 Marriott hotels in eight cities were on strike.

The hotels are in Boston, Detroit, Maui, Oahu, Oakland, San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose.

Union officials feel that negotiations for better pay and improved workplace security have stalled.

Marriott International, the world’s largest hotel chain after its merger with Starwood Hotels 7 Resorts, is unwilling “to make meaningful progress on central issues,” the union that represents the hotel employees said, so the workers have walked off the job.

Hotels impacted by the walkout include the Aloft Boston Seaport, Ritz-Carlton Boston Common, San Francisco Marriott Union Square, Sheraton Maui, Sheraton Waikiki, Westin Book Cadillac Detroit, W Boston, W San Francisco, and the Westin St. Francis in San Francisco.
