Southwest to Offer Free Wi-Fi for Messaging

DSC_0819Southwest Airlines said that it will begin to offer unlimited complimentary access to its in-flight Wi-Fi for messaging apps starting in October.

Supported messaging services will include iMessage and WhatsApp, The system will not support SMS or Short Text Messaging, however.

Passengers will be able to use either service on all of Southwest’s Wi-Fi-enabled flights although not all aircraft will offer the free service at launch.

“Use your chat apps for free during the flight,” the airline said on a placard announcing the new service.

Delta Air Lines was the first U.S. carrier to offer free messaging in October 2017. American Airlines was the first U.S. carrier to offer in-flight Wi-Fi, a feature introduced in 2007.
