Restaurant Review: La Pulperia, New York City
The Coquito Passion (Don Q Silver, Don Q Coconut Rum, passion fruit puree agave nectar, and fresh mint) and El Señor Fashioned (Knob Greek Rye, orange bitters, old fashioned bitters, and maple syrup served with smoking cinnamon) did the trick.
We started with fish tacos, which were extremely satisfying, and empanadas, also quite good. I opted for a house specialty, the Barbacoa de Paco, grilled Brazilian fish ribs with a savory orange chipotle barbecue sauce, which made me want to forget traditional beef short ribs. My companion’s seafood ravioli was good but didn’t blow us away.
Dessert was a masterpiece: Crepas, coconut cream, and banana brulée accompanied by dulce de leche lúcuma ice cream.
If time doesn’t allow for a quick flight to Brazil for a wonderfully innovative meal, simply head to Second Avenue. You don’t even have to bring your passport.
