IMG_2478American Express said it is adding a freeze feature to its personal credit and charge cards.

The feature can be activated online in the event a card is misplaced and presumed not to be permanently lost or stolen.

While freezing a card will prevent any charges from being made on the account, it will not preserve the limits that federal law place on liability when cards are reported lost or stolen.

Other credit-card issuers that offer similar features include Bank of America, Capital One, Citi, and Discover.
