DSC_0373Marriott International announced it will soon remove plastic straws and stirrers from its hotels across the globe as well as at its corporate headquarters.

The plan, which involves over 6,500 properties, will be fully in place by July 2019. The hotelier says this will eliminate the use of over one billion plastic straws per year as well as 250,000 plastic stirrers.

The company has also begun to replace small shampoo and conditioner bottles in some of its properties with larger in-shower dispensers.

Marriott joins a growing list of travel and hospitality companies that are moving to eliminate the unnecessary use of plastic items such as straws. The list includes Alaska Airlines, Hyatt Hotels, and Starbucks among others.
