American Airlines announced on Thursday that it would allow passengers traveling on so-called basic-economy fares to bring a standard carry-on bag onto the aircraft and use the overhead bins in addition to bringing a smaller personal bag.

The airline said in a statement that the change is being made “to make Basic Economy more competitive.”

The change goes into effect on September 5.

“Removing the bag restriction will make Basic Economy more competitive, allowing us to offer this low-fare product to more customers, said the airline’s president, Robert Isom.

American first introduced basic economy fares in February 2017. The fares will continue to include complimentary entertainment, drinks, and snacks.
