Vancouver International Airport held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday to commemorate the start of an ambitious 5.6-billion Canadian dollars ($4.3 billion) 20-year expansion plan.

Vancouver Airport Authority said it will spend 1.7 billion Canadian dollars in the next three years alone on the project.

The airport plans to “enhance the passenger experience at YVR and build a world-class sustainable hub airport,” it said in a statement.

Plans include the addition of new wings to the terminal, a new elevated taxiway over Grant McConachie Way, new parking facilities, and a geothermal plant.
