DSC_0373Marriott International broke ground on its new headquarters building in downtown Bethesda, Maryland, Monday, commemorating the start of the first phase of construction on the project.

The companies who are managing the project and own the land it will sit on, Boston Properties and the Bernstein Companies, are erecting a headquarters building with over 785,000 square feet (72,928 square meters) of office space for approximately 3,500 workers that is designed to meet LEED Gold standards. The building will also incorporate a Marriott Hotel with 244 rooms and a roof-top bar and lounge.

“From our humble roots as a nine-stool root beer stand in downtown Washington, D.C. to a hospitality company known around the world, we look forward to many more years together as we create a new, 21st century home in downtown Bethesda,” said J.W. Marriott Jr., the hotelier’s executive chairman.

Marriott was founded in 1927 when John Willard and Alice Sheets Marriott opened a small A&W Root Beer stand in Washington, D.C. This grew into the chain of Hot Shoppes restaurants. The two opened their first hotel, the Twin Bridges Marriott Motor Hotel, in 1957.

The hotelier served root beer in commemorative mugs at the groundbreaking ceremony.
