Delta Reports May Traffic Increase, But Decline in Load Factor

DSC_0062Delta Air Lines announced operational results for May 2018.

The Atlanta-based carrier’s total system traffic for the month was 19.69 billion revenue passenger miles, or RPMs, a 2.9% increase from 19.14 billion RPMs in May 2017.  Domestic traffic rose 3.7%, from 11.78 billion RPMs to 12.31 billion RPMs, while international traffic increased to 7.48 billion RPMs, a 1.7% rise from 7.36 billion RPMs the previous May.

Total system-wide capacity for the month rose to 22.83 billion available seat miles, or ASMs, from 22.07 billion ASMs, a 3.5% increase. The airline’s domestic capacity was 14.08 billion ASMs, a year-over-year increase of 4.5% from 13.48 billion in May 2017, while international capacity rose by 1.9% year-over-year, up to 8.75 billion ASMs from 8.59 billion last year.

Load factor for the month was 86.3%, down 0.4 percentage points from 86.7% last May. Delta’s domestic load factor decreased by 0.7 percentage points to 86.7% from 87.4%, while its international load factor dropped by 0.2 percentage points to 85.5% from last year’s 85.7%.
