IMG_3340United Airlines said Friday that it increased its stake in Brazilian carrier Azul from 3.7% to 8%.

The Chicago-based carrier acquired the additional stake via a private preferred share transaction with Hainan Airlines.

“Azul’s strong network in Brazil, unique business model and exceptional customer service make this transaction a good long-term investment,” said Andrew Levy, United’s chief financial officer.

United made an initial investment in Azul in 2015.

Travelers can connect from one airline to the other via the airlines’ gateways at São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and Orlando International Airport
