American Airlines said late Friday it had ordered an additional 47 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The deal, valued at $12 billion at list prices, includes 22 787-8s and 25 787-9s. Deliveries are slated to start in 2020 and 2023 respectively, and will make American, the world’s largest airline, the largest 787 operator in the Western Hemisphere.

“This was a difficult decision between the Boeing 787 and the Airbus A350 and A330neo and we thank both manufacturers for their aggressive efforts to earn more of American’s business,” said Robert Isom, the carrier’s president. “In the end, our goal to simplify our fleet made the 787 a more compelling choice.”

American will use the 787-8s to replace its 22 767-300ER, while the 787-9s will replace its nine Airbus A330-300s and several older 777-200s.

“This new order is a powerful endorsement of the 787 family’s unique passenger appeal and unmatched ability to help airlines open new routes and grow profitably,” said Kevin McAllister, Boeing’s CEO, in a statement.

The Fort Worth-based carrier had an order for 22 Airbus A350s, which competes with the Dreamliner, on the books since its 2013 merger with US Airways but today’s announcement will end up simplifying its fleet as opposed to introducing a new aircraft into the mix.

The deal comes several weeks after Hawaiian Airlines opted for the Dreamliner and cancelled an order for six Airbus A330-800 neo aircraft.

American and Boeing also announced that the airline will defer the delivery of 40 737 narrow-body jets that were previously slated to arrive between 2020 and 2022 “to better align with planned retirements of other narrowbody aircraft.”
