The airline industry predicts that a record 151 million passengers will take to the skies on U.S. airlines during the 2018 spring travel season, six million more than last year and approximately 2.47 million per day.

The two major holidays occur over the same period – Passover begins the evening of March 30, while Easter takes place on Sunday, April 1 – which translates to millions of people heading to visit family or taking a vacation trip at virtually the same time.

Airlines for America, the trade association representing most U.S. airlines, said Wednesday that there will be a 4% increase in the number of U.S. airline passengers traveling worldwide between March 1 and April 30.

“Travelers are taking to the skies this spring in record numbers, thanks to persistently low fares, unsurpassed levels of investment in the product, [and] increasing competition,” said the group’s chief economist John Heimlich.

To speed travelers through airport security, airlines and airports are investing heavily in new security lane technology including so-called automated smart lanes and enrollment in the Department of Homeland Security’s trusted traveler programs has risen by 3.5 million in the past year.
