DRIVING THE 2017 DODGE JOURNEY CROSSROAD

Once underway, the Journey offers great visibility for a mid-size SUV thanks to the relatively thin pillars, a relic of the last decade. The cabin is quiet, the ride smooth. The third-row is a bit snug for adults but it will do for short rides or younger passengers.

Clever storage options abound: throughout the vehicle, there are hidden compartments suitable for reasonably large items, such as a camera, or a laptop. The compartments are so well hidden we didn’t see two of them until a week had passed (hint: look under the second-row footwells as well as beneath the rear cargo floor). Indeed, in this respect, its almost mini van-esque.

The 283-hp 3.6-liter V6 delivers decent performance and driving it was a pleasure thanks to the fact that the Journey may be one of the last vehicles being sold with hydraulically assisted power steering, versus the electrically assisted systems found in newer cars.

Fuel economy, at 19 mpg (12.4 l/100 km) in town and 25 (9.4) on the highway, is fair at best.

BOTTOM LINE

If you find yourself yearning for an SUV from the previous decade with gobs of space and price is a major consideration, the Journey is well worth considering if you can cut a good deal. But, if you do, go for the basic model, which starts at $22,495 before any discounts and negotiate the hell out of the deal. The Journey does have incredible popularity: people keep buying them, as sales have averaged almost 100,000 units a year for the past four years.
