Review: Air Canada Signature Suite at Toronto Pearson International Airport

No matter where you are in an airport, you feel as if you are in an airport. That is unless you are in the new Air Canada Signature Suite lounge at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Here in the lounge, the outside world virtually disappears. It’s more like a private supper club, as only paid business-class passengers traveling on Air Canada flights are invited. Indeed, you feel as if you needed to know the secret password, which means you’ll be driven across the tarmac in a BMW to the airport’s Terminal 1 international departures pier to the new lounge.

First, some background. The lounge was designed by the Montreal design firm Heekyung Duquette to be serene and tranquil and it succeeds in this respect. The designers used natural materials including Canadian maple throughout the lounge. A highlight in the lounge are two prominently placed works of art, specifically in the elegant sit-down dining room is a mural of a forested Canadian landscape by Ottawa artist Gavin Lynch and a Cloudscape Chandelier by the Toronto design firm Moss & Lam that hovers over the space.

There are three separate dining areas: the aforementioned main dining room, a second dining room, and a private dining room that is available upon request. In addition to table service in the main dining room, there is also an elegant bar and a buffet table for self-service.

Several lounge spaces are provided including a conversation pit close to the entrance, where I spent about half the evening, and an area that looks more like a posh concierge lounge at a hotel than that of a typical airport.

The designers’ attention to detail did not end at the W.C. The materials used are simply exquisite and each individual cabin is equipped with commode and sink and provides Molton Brown Orange and Bergamot hand wash and lotion. The Signature Suite lounge does not, however, offer showers or a napping area, although travelers are welcome to visit the Maple Leaf Lounge to freshen up with a shower.
