International Tourism Declined Under Trump
International tourism has fallen 4% to 41 million visitors during the first 12 months of President Trump’s administration, according to figures published by the National Travel and Tourism Office.
The agency also reported that travel spending has fallen by 3.3%, or $4.6 billion, and that 40,000 jobs in tourism have been lost.
Under the previous administration, the number of visitors to the United States had been increasing dramatically each year.
As a result, the U.S. Travel Association, a D.C.-based travel advocacy non-profit, plans a “Visit US” campaign to demonstrate that the country welcomes foreign visitors.
The group may face an uphill battle, however.
Responding to a 2017 Facebook post by the New York Times, readers based in Europe cited the Trump administration and its policies for not traveling to the United States.
