Apple to Add Support for Key Safety Feature, Advanced Mobile Location, in iOS 11.3
Apple announced plans to add support for Advanced Mobile Location in the next version of its mobile operating system, iOS 11.3.
Advanced Mobile Location transmits a user’s exact location in countries where the feature is supported. It recognizes when an emergency call is being placed and activates the device’s GPS or Wi-Fi radios to collect the caller’s precise location, sending an SMS to emergency services with the caller’s location.
The system is said to be 4,000 times more accurate than current systems that rely on cell towers for such information.
In order for AML to work, it must be supported by the local mobile operator. The service is fully operational in Austria, Estonia, Iceland, Lithuania, and the United Kingdom in Europe and works across all mobile networks.
A study by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute found that AML can save 30 seconds on average in response time.
