Snowstorm Grounds Flights at London’s Heathrow Airport
A winter storm spread snow across England Sunday, closing roads and grounding flights in its wake.
Thousands of flights were delayed or cancelled at airports throughout the country. The scene was described as “chaotic” by one traveler at London Heathrow.
“Some flights at Heathrow will be disrupted on Monday due to crew and aircraft being out of position following yesterday’s weather,” the airport said in a statement on its website.
Some parts of London saw as much as 10” (25.4 cm) of the white stuff although less was reported at Heathrow.
Many airlines said that the disruptions would continue into Monday, including British Airways, the largest operator at Heathrow. Heathrow Airport, National Air Traffic Services, and airlines serving the United Kingdom agreed to curtail flights in and out of the country’s airports.
“Heathrow is continuing to experience severe adverse weather conditions,” said British Airways in a statement on its website. “As a result of the forecast of continued bad weather we have agreed with Heathrow Airport, National Air Traffic Services and other airlines to reduce our flight schedule from Heathrow on Monday December 11.”
