IMG_9463Just in the nick of time, the U.S. Department of Transportation issued Santa Claus special operating authority for flights on Christmas Eve.

The order authorizes Mr. Kringle “to serve various rooftop markets” on the night of December 24-25, 2017 and was signed by Elaine Chao, the secretary of transportation.

The order further notes that Santa Claus will be using a miniature sleigh powered by eight tiny reindeer, but leaving open the possibility that there will be a ninth, with a “special air navigation warning lamp in its nose,” in the event of fog or snow. Rooftop takeoffs and landings may be accompanied by certain noise, in particular, the clattering of hooves, the order adds.

The United States is not the only country that has granted Santa Claus such authority. In recent years, the United Kingdom has issued several notices to airmen about the “Santa1” voyage, calling on pilots to be particularly alert “when transiting areas with high concentrations of chimneys.”
