DSC_0420Boeing confirmed Friday it was in talks to acquire Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer.

“The Boeing Company and Embraer today confirmed the two companies are engaged in discussions regarding a potential combination, the basis of which remains under discussion,” the two companies said in separate identical statements, adding that no further statements would be issued concerning the discussions.

The two companies also said that there was no guarantee “a transaction will result from these discussions.” Any possible deal would be subject to regulatory approval in both countries and the Brazilian government would have to approve the sale of one of its leading manufacturing companies to the U.S. firm.

The move would be Boeing’s largest purchase since the acquisition of McDonnell Douglas 20 years ago. Industry observers believe it was at least in part motivated by the surprise deal between Airbus and Bombardier under which the two will collaborate on Bombardier’s smaller C Series aircraft.
