DSC_0596 (1)Many parts of the United States and Canada are experiencing bitterly cold temperatures this weekend and forecasters believe that the cold weather will continue well into the start of 2018.

Travel has become treacherous, as even the mere act of walking outside in some areas is dangerous due to the extreme cold. On Friday, over 9,600 flights were delayed in North America while 690 were cancelled. Numerous accidents on highways have occurred due to icy road conditions.

As New Yorkers and visitors alike ring in the New Year watching the ball drop in Times Square, temperatures may approach a record low, although not quite as cold as the coldest New Year’s Eve on record, which was in 1917 when the mercury dropped to -7° F (-22° C).

North Dakota and northern Minnesota have been among the coldest spots in the country with temperatures expected to plunge to around -30° F (-34° C). With temperatures hitting -45° F (-42.8° C), parts of Canada are colder than the North Pole.
