Following the demise of Air Berlin and Lufthansa’s acquisition of many of its assets, the Frankfurt-based carrier announced plans to significantly increase its domestic flying this winter.

Lufthansa said that it increased its capacity on many routes by 25%, and some major routes will see a 60% increase.

These increases include an additional 14 weekly flights between Frankfurt and Düsseldorf, as well as seven extra weekly flights between Frankfurt and Berlin.

Lufthansa Group airlines will also add approximately 100 flights between Munich and Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, and Cologne.

Furthermore, Lufthansa will switch to operating Boeing 747-400 aircraft on its Frankfurt-Berlin route through December, and said that, going forward, it plans to use Airbus A321 aircraft, which can seat up to 200 passengers, on the route whenever possible.

Several Lufthansa Group airlines will also add a number of short-haul international flights. Austrian Airlines will increase its Vienna-Berlin and its Vienna- Düsseldorf frequencies by 14 weekly flights, while Swiss International Air Lines will offer 15 and 21 additional weekly flights on its Zürich -Düsseldorf and Zürich- Berlin routes, respectively.

Lufthansa said that capacity increases were made possible by cancelling less popular routes, the deployment of new aircraft, and wet-lease agreements for aircraft owned by other airlines.

In addition to the increase in European flights, Lufthansa’s Eurowings subsidiary said that it plans to begin a new route between Düsseldorf and New York on April 28, 2018. Next year the carrier will launch thrice-weekly service from Düsseldorf to Fort Myers and Miami, on May 3 and May 4, respectively.

Düsseldorf-New York flights will be offered every day except Tuesdays, while flights to Fort Myers will be operated Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The carrier will operate its Düsseldorf-Miami route on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
