United Airlines Reports Drop in Traffic and Load Factor for September

United Airlines announced operational results for September 2017.

The carrier’s consolidated traffic and load factor fell following a month marked by operational challenges from several severe storms.

Total traffic for the Chicago-based airline during the month of September was 17.2 billion RPMs, or revenue passenger miles, a decrease of 1.6% from 17.5 billion RPMs in September 2016. The carrier’s total capacity for the month was up 1.7% to 21.4 billion ASMs, or available seat miles, from 21.1 billion ASMs last September.

Meanwhile, United’s consolidated load factor was down 2.7 percentage points to 80.5% from 83.2% in September 2016.

United reported a 1.9% drop in domestic traffic on a 1.2% increase in capacity while there was a 1.3% decrease in international traffic on a 2.3% increase in international capacity.

“Last quarter, our employees came together to keep our operation moving through three historic storms, including recording our best consolidated on-time departure performance ever for the month of September,,” said United President Scott Kirby.
