DSC_0683At least 58 people are reported dead and 515 others injured following a shooting at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival opposite the Mandalay Bay hotel.

The shooter was a gunman on a high floor of the Las Vegas hotel from which he let loose a rapid-fire barrage in the direction of the outdoor concert venue.

“Currently the Clark County Fire Department is estimating the injuries to be well over 400,” said Sheriff Joseph Lombardo of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department early Monday morning.

The mass shooting temporarily shut down nearby McCarran International Airport‏. Flights were diverted to other airports while the drama unfolded. The airport reopened shortly before 1 a.m. local time but said that passengers should expect delays.

The gunman, identified by police as Stephen Paddock, 64, of Mesquite, Nevada, was found in a 32nd-floor room in the hotel with “[an] excess of 10 rifles,” the sheriff said. “We believe the individual killed himself prior to our entry.” Paddock had no criminal history prior to the incident.
