Survey: Travelers Rely Most on Airline, Messaging, and E-Mail Apps During Trips

Nowadays, travel without a smartphone in hand is akin to traveling without a map, although the smartphone is capable of so much more. Indeed, we assumed (correctly, as it turned out) that map apps are among the top used smartphone apps by frequent travelers.

According to a recent Frequent Business Traveler survey, conducted in partnership with GlobeRunner Insights, the research division of FBT’s parent company Accura, the most used app category is airline-specific apps, such as those from American Airlines, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Lufthansa, and United Airlines.

The least used? Dating apps, sometimes referred to as hook-up apps, such as Grindr and Tinder.

Survey takers were asked to rank 18 categories of apps, ranging from weather to social media to search, in response to the question “ Which apps do you use the most when traveling?”.

Not surprisingly, the top used app was an airline-specific one. “If my American Airlines app stopped working, I’d be in deep trouble as that’s how much I rely on it,” one frequent traveler told FBT.

Next were e-mail apps followed by communications apps such as text, iMessage, Skype, and FaceTime. “Using FaceTime helps me feel like I’m with my family even when I’m on the road,” a senior executive at a pharmaceutical house said.

Indeed, one of the most exciting parts of a trip, be it for business or leisure, is to share what you are experiencing with friends and family.

Rounding out the Top 5 were maps and flight information such as the Flight Aware app.
