There were some surprises in the rankings. Based on our preliminary research, we had expected weather, social media, and ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Lyft to come out in the top five. Weather ranked seventh, ride-hailing apps were ninth, and social media didn’t even make it into the top ten, placing eleventh.

Another unexpected ranking was Music, placing as, number 14. Anywhere you go, bus, train, or plane, you are apt to see people connected to their earbuds, listening to music, yet the category placed behind Social Media and News, the latter being number 12.

Finally a clarification is in order because so many asked: The many useful apps that nonetheless would be used only sporadically in the course of a trip and we didn’t think any of these would fall into the Top 18, be it an airport lounge locator such as LoungeBuddy or a toilet locator (yes, there’s an app or two for that as well). We also didn’t include trip-planning apps because the purpose of this survey was to find out what was used once the trip was already underway.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

Results for this GlobeRunner Insights survey are based on an online survey conducted between September 1, 2017 and September 20, 2017, with a random sample of 1,047 adults. Of that group, 77.2% reside in the United States, 8.1% in the United Kingdom, 5.1% in Canada, 4% in Germany and 5.6% in the remainder of the world. Forty-nine of the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia are represented.

For results based on the total sample group, one can state with 96% confidence that the maximum margin of sampling error is ±2.05 percentage points.

The survey was designed by GlobeRunner Insights, the market research division of Accura Media Group, parent of Frequent Business Traveler. Through organic and viral contact, we received 1,047 complete responses from frequent travelers. While this group is not reflective of American society as a whole, it is representative of a population that travels frequently.
