The fingerprint scanner at the bottom of the screen is fast and can be used to authenticate purchases and login credentials for banking apps. One cool thing introduced with the Moto Z2 Force Edition is the ability to use the scanner as a one button navigation tool. Users can enable One Button Nav in the settings menu to replace the standard virtual triangle, circle, and square buttons that usually live at the bottom of the screen. Just swipe left on the sensor to go back, tap it once to go home, and swipe right to access recent apps. This feature works surprisingly well and frees up some real estate on the home screen.

However, what really sets the Moto Z phones apart from its Android brethren are their Moto Mod capabilities. Moto Mods are modular attachments that can be quickly and easily affixed to the back of a Moto Z phone with a magnetic snap. All of the mods from last year are compatible with the Z2 Force Edition, but Motorola took the wraps off new Moto Mods with the release of its new phone.

I tested the 360-degree camera mod, which lets the user capture seamless panoramas with the click of a button, and record 4K video with 3D sound. As an avid mobile photographer, never before have I been as impressed with a phone’s ability to document a moment so thoroughly. On a recent ferry ride I recorded a 360-degree video of the boat passing underneath the Verrazano Narrows bridge. Later, I was able to completely re-live the moment and scroll horizontally and vertically through the footage to view new angles that I hadn’t seen the first time around. The mod can also be used to take 150-degree selfies to capture you, your friends, and your surroundings.

BOTTOM LINE

Motorola’s Moto Force Z2 Force Edition is a polished, fully functional, and downright fun phone to use. The phone is a powerhouse, and Moto Mods add a unique level of customization to the smartphone’s appeal. The camera, ultra HD display, and shatter proof construction are the cherries on top of a pretty sweet cake. One request: more brightness, please!
