Restaurant Review: Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Stamford, Connecticut

My journey to Stamford, Connecticut to have my U.S. passport renewed left me with approximately two to three hours to occupy me between the initial application process and the scheduled pick-up time at 2:30 p.m. Fortunately, as several of the helpful agents at the passport office pointed out, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que was just across the street.

What they didn’t tell me is that this may very well be one of the best barbecue joints in the Northeast.

The restaurant specializes on barbecue pork ribs, offering from a quarter rack to a full rack. Most dishes come with two sides: there’s a full rack special for $30 with four sides, which is a great deal if you have the right number of hungry diners. Service was friendly and sincere: the server and other staff seemed to genuinely care that their patrons were enjoying their meals. The ambience is early converted warehouse (in the best sense) and the ambient noise level was sufficiently muted for having a private conversation.

But alas, I was by my lonesome and couldn’t decide between brisket and ribs. As luck would have it, the next page of the menu offered “Pick Your Own Combo” selections so I managed to sample both.

The selection of sides included beans, fresh cut fries, mashed potatoes, chili, BBQ fried rice, and my choice, coleslaw and macaroni and cheese.

The St. Louis-style ribs weren’t overly smoky, which my palate appreciated. There was a sweet, tangy quality to them and I tried the restaurant’s own sauces – Sensuous Slathering and Wango Tango – which added a bit of a twist as well. The thinly-sliced brisket strips were just right: juicy, a little fatty, and extremely satisfying.

While I was close to being stuffed and already had packed the macaroni and cheese to take away, I still had an hour and the peanut butter pie with Oreo crust was very appealing. This rich and thick and tasty delight was perfect for nursing for my final half hour before returning across the street to conclude my business.

Syracuse, New York-based Dinosaur Bar-B-Cue has a total of nine locations, including Harlem, Troy, Rochester, and of course Connecticut. Everything is freshly prepared in the restaurant and this is reflected in the taste and quality of what is served.
