Fiat Chrysler to Partner with BMW to Develop Autonomous Vehicles

BMW Group, Intel Corporation, and Mobileye announced that the three companies signed a memorandum of understanding with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles to develop an autonomous driving platform.

BMW, Intel, and Mobileye first collaborated in July 2016, with a goal of developing solutions for highly automated driving – level 3 – and fully automated driving – level 4/5 – by 2021. The three have been working together since, and Fiat is the first automaker to join BMW in the endeavor.

The group expects to see 40 autonomous test vehicles deployed by the end of this year.

In a statement, BMW said that the agreement will allow each company to leverage the other’s individual strengths in designing a scalable architecture that can be utilized by automakers worldwide, while maintaining each one’s brand identity.

“The future of transportation relies on auto and tech industry leaders working together to develop a scalable architecture that automakers around the globe can adopt and customize,” said Brian Krzanich, CEO of Intel.
