Review: Elegante Salon VIP Lounge, Aeropuerto Internacional José Martí Terminal 3, Havana

Gate area, Terminal 3, Aeropuerto Internacional José Martí in Havana

The Elegante Salon VIP lounge in Terminal 3 at the Aeropuerto Internacional José Martí in Havana is used by Air France, KLM, and Virgin Atlantic Airways for their business-class passengers. Others may gain entry for 25 CUC, which is how I gained admittance as Delta does not have a lounge partner in Havana.

The lounge is post security and there is a VIP line at the very right of the security checkpoint supposedly for lounge guests but it was closed. Nonetheless, there was zero wait time and the security process itself wasn’t terribly onerous. (“Sir, can I check your bag? Do you have a lighter?” “No, I don’t.” “Oh ok, never mind, gracias!”

The lounge staff was very friendly and welcoming as I arrived and a woman at the reception desk carefully noted my flight number and said she would call it for boarding. She also gave me a Wi-Fi code, which was good for 30 minutes’ use.

The lounge’s décor was somewhat drab, dark colors prevailed (think rich green Naugahyde-like chairs and sofas that your great aunt might have had in the day). The lounge consisted of multiple seating areas and it was not at all crowded when I was there. The lounge had a separate room with two workstations with Internet access although, in part because of the shower-curtain room divider, it looked too scary to enter.

Aside from a few travelers, a group of JetBlue employees who work at the airport seemed to be using the lounge as their employee lounge, although they brought their own food and drink.

The food offerings were sparse and not particularly appetizing in appearance although the cupcake was quite tasty, especially the frosting. The offerings included cheese bits, some sandwiches of indeterminate origin, and dried prunes and apricots.
