Restaurant Review: Jägerhaus Gastropub and Biergarten, Whitestone, New York

As the giant pretzel disappeared – I’ll just have one more small piece, really! – our appetizer, deviled eggs, dressed with blue cheese and Speck, appeared. While I associate deviled eggs more with the South than with Southern Germany, they were the perfect accompaniment to our Bier that afternoon and a dish I would order again.

Without too much of a wait, the entrée we would share, the Wurst Teller or sausage platter, arrived at the table looking quite fetching. The platter includes one each of a Bratwurst, a Bockwurst, and Knackwurst. It’s accompanied by an excellent Rotkohl (red cabbage), some sauerkraut, and some sautéed potatoes.

While I’ve had the restaurant’s Weißwurst before and enjoyed it immensely, this platter was a disappointment as all three Würste were bland. On the other hand, I’ve also had the Hungarian goulash entrée on a prior visit, served with Spätzle, which was also excellent but seemed too heavy for a hot summer day.

Since this is a Biergarten, one can go merely to have a Bier but it would be a mistake to omit the giant pretzel. Having sampled a variety of the menu offerings over several visits, I’d go back for a pleasant afternoon in the Biergarten and I would go back when in the mood for Weißwurst or deviled eggs. You probably would, too.
