IMG_4084MUNICH—A collision between a tour bus and a truck on a German Autobahn resulted in the death of 17 passengers on the bus as well as the bus driver. Thirty people were injured in the crash that occurred shortly after 7 a.m. local time in Southern Germany.

Some of the injuries were serious, police said and many of the victims were between the ages of 66 and 81. The bus was taking the travelers to the Lake Garda region of northern Italy.

Police said it appears that the bus driver did not see the slower moving truck resulting in the collision.

The accident took place on the A9 Autobahn near Münchberg in Bavaria. The A9 links Munich and Berlin and the area near where the incident took place is known for limited visibility at times due to hills and rapid changes in weather. Ten people were killed in an accident in the region that involved 121 automobiles in fog, while 57 were injured in a 182-car pile-up following sudden heavy snow in 2003.

Chancellor Angela Merkel released a statement on the accident later that morning. “Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and we wish all those who were injured a speedy recovery.”
