DSC_0505Hong Kong Airlines announced that it plans to begin a new codeshare agreement with Virgin Australia.

Under the codeshare, Virgin Australia will be able to place its code on Hong Kong Airlines’ service between Hong Kong and the Gold Coast and Cairns, Australia.

In addition, Hong Kong Airlines will codeshare on 15 Virgin Australia routes, including between Melbourne and Hong Kong; Melbourne and both Christchurch and Auckland, New Zealand; and between Melbourne and Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Perth, Sydney, Gold Coast, and Darwin, Australia. Other routes will include Gold Coast-Auckland, Sydney-Gold Coast, Sydney-Cairns, Brisbane-Cairns, and Gold Coast-Adelaide.

Beginning July 5, members of Hong Kong Airlines’ Fortune Wings Club loyalty program will be able to earn miles on eligible Virgin Australia flights, while Virgin Australia Velocity Frequent Flyer members will be able to earn miles on eligible Hong Kong Airlines flights.

The codeshare is the first step of a proposed strategic alliance between the two airlines. Hong Kong Airlines said that it plans to create an expanded network of destinations across Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Australia.
