While my desk space was lacking, function space at the property was not so limiting. With over 30,000 square feet (2,787 square meters) of meeting and event space spread over nearly a dozen rooms, the hotel is well equipped to handle business functions. Also offered are a dedicated meeting concierge, an in-house audiovisual expert, and onsite catering services.

I imagined that a downtown hotel would have a modest gym and perhaps a small pool. Which is why I was surprised when the front desk manager informed me that hotel guests receive complimentary access to the Sporting Club at The Bellevue, which is adjacent to the hotel and accessible via a sky bridge at the fourth floor level.

I still didn’t quite believe it, until I visited the facility, which provides 93,000 square feet (8,640 square meters) of fitness space, racquetball and basketball courts, an indoor track, rooms for aerobics classes and activities, massage and spa services, and a lane pool with connecting steam rooms and saunas. I made use of the track and whirlpool that left me feeling very healthy.

An elevator to the top floor opens into a spacious dome room with a massive chandelier. This is XIX, the hotel’s penthouse restaurant.  Natural light pouring in from three sides fills the area and balconies with comfortable seating provide picture-perfect views of the city’s skyline. Also on the top floor are the XIX cafe, which provides all day dining, and the XIX bar.

Breakfast at XIX consists of a spread laid out on a circular table in the center of the dining area, providing easy access from all tables in the room. I helped myself to some coffee, orange juice, buttered toast, fresh fruit, and cereal. Other choices included baked goods, scrambled eggs, breakfast meats, yogurt, bagels, and more. In the evening, XIX serves dinner and drinks.

Few Philadelphia hotels can claim the history of the Bellevue, and the hotel manages to preserve this legacy while maintaining modern relevance.  It was a humbling experience to have shared a space with presidents from the last century. I enjoyed my time at the property thanks to the staff’s willingness to cater to my every need, the unique and comfortable room, and easy access to nearby attractions. On my next trip to Philly, I know where I’ll be staying.
