BMW and Intel announced Wednesday the launch of their highly automated car test fleet.

Using technology from Intel’s recent acquisition, Mobileye, the two companies are rolling out a fleet of 40 BMW 7 Series highly automated sedans with multiple Mobileye cameras for road scanning.

The companies plan to use the fleet to develop the products that will eventually be offered in new cars.

The autonomous revolution, as the two companies referred to it, will reduce traffic congestion and pollution while improving driving safety and overall fuel economy.

BMW and Intel plan to create a scalable platform that will be available to other automakers. BMW will likely have some offerings from this partnership in its lineup by the start of the coming decade.
