Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport will gain a sixth runway following the sale to the city and demolition of the Sheraton Atlanta Airport Hotel.

The 12-story 394-room hotel currently stands on the southwestern edge of the airport and was sold for $16.7 million.

The city plans to add a new runway between the existing fourth and fifth runways as part of its $6 billion expansion plan that will roll out in the coming decades.

The hotel is expected to be razed during the summer.
