Review and Test Drive: 2017 Nissan Murano Platinum Edition

The story of the third-generation Nissan Murano, based closely on the Renaissance concept Nissan unveiled at the 2013 North American International Auto Show, is unique for its class. It hews so closely to the look of the concept car that Nissan executives were wont to speak of it as a “concept car on wheels.”

The edgy design hasn’t aged at all since we first saw it at the launch drive in 2015; if anything it’s gotten better in the years since.

The Murano’s designer, Ken Lee, told me he drew inspiration for the interior from the dawn of the jet age and strove to pamper driver and passengers with luxurious surroundings.

Once inside the cabin, I found the Nissan Gravity Seats as comfortable and soothing as I remembered them. Nissan designed the seats to provide continuous support from the occupant’s hips to the shoulders, keeping the occupant from slumping, which would put pressure on the lower back and cause pain and fatigue on longer drives. The driver, front passenger, and outboard rear seats are all of the Zero Gravity design.

Rich-feeling materials abound, resulting in one of the most luxurious cabins in its class. The Platinum Edition trim level offers leather and wood grain accents that create a truly upscale look. The Murano’s direct competition pales in comparison. Indeed, the first time I saw the interior I asked one of the Nissan product managers how this will not take away sales from higher end Infiniti vehicles.

The tried and tested 3.5-liter V6 may not be high tech but it is eager to please and offers a surfeit of power on demand. The Murano’s steering provides decent feedback and feels naturally weighted.
