The new Cadillac CT6 – the first car to adopt Cadillac’s new product naming conventions announced in 2014 – is more than just a new name with a pretty face.

Indeed, when Cadillac first announced the new product designations – each will start with the letters “CT” followed by a number that indicates its place and size in the lineup – it was greeted with a collective sigh of relief. The move came on the heels of the appointment of Johan de Nysschen as the division’s general manager. He came from Infiniti, where he renamed that brand’s lineup with each model beginning with either Q or QX.

GM’s luxury division won’t rename existing models, however. “We will only change a product’s name when the product itself is redesigned or an all-new model is created,” said Uwe Elinghaus, Cadillac’s chief marketing officer.

Cadillac cleaned house in a similar manner once before and the results had mixed reviews. It was out with the Sedan Deville and in with the DTS; out with the Seville and in with the STS (in both cases TS stood for “touring sedan”). Then the DTS was replaced with the XTS, the ATS was introduced, and all bets were off on the division having a semblance of name recognition for its models.

Until now.

The Cadillac CT6 is not only putting Cadillac on the map but bringing clarity to the previously muddy nomenclature and product strategy. The CT6 is the first rear-wheel drive full-size Cadillac sedan since the Fleetwood was discontinued in 1996, making it the Fleetwood’s indirect spiritual successor.

We spent two weeks with two different Cadillac CT6 sedans and we quickly discovered that this was not even remotely close to our grandfather’s Cadillac.
