While there are literally thousands of activities planned throughout the year, there are some large-scale activities worthy of note that range from arts and culture to sports and recreation, all celebrating Canada’s heritage and future.

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra will observe the sesquicentennial with a celebration of the country’s diverse musical landscape, ranging from indigenous to indie to classical to cutting edge.

The Toronto International Film Festival will highlight 150 seminal Canadian movies, television shows, commercials, and music videos.

Innovation 150, a yearlong program sponsored by five leading science organizations, will celebrate Canada’s history of innovation with an eye towards discoveries in the future.

National Canadian Film Day 150 will take place on April 19 by broadcasting and screening great Canadian movies at more than 600 locations. Its organizers say it will be the biggest film festival in the world.

Many Americans take Canada for granted, often referring to it as the 51st state, but the country’s unique identity and exceptional cultural heritage makes a visit during the sesquicentennial a unique and compelling experience.
