Now that Volvo has brought the full range of the 90 Series to the market it has turned its attention to the 60 Series, which will be at Volvo dealerships soon. To better appreciate what is to come, we undertook a last hurrah with the current generation XC60, which was introduced at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. The XC60 came to North American in 2009 as a 2010 model. Despite that, the car has withstood the test of time without coming across as dated.

As one would expect with a Volvo, opening the driver’s door reveals a spacious and cool Scandinavian interior with a minimum of clutter, along with an ample use of supple leather, plush carpeting, and other natural, high-quality soft-touch materials. Think subdued Scandinavian luxury, not fluorescent Ikea.

The 2017 XC60 offers a decent range of standard safety and tech equipment including a Harman Kardon premium audio system, a rearview camera, a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats and steering wheel, HID headlights, and a power liftgate. The only dated component is the navigation system, which still exudes 2010 tech. Despite its age, the ergonomics are top notch.

Volvo has imbued the current XC60 with a plethora of safety equipment as well. This includes automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, radar-based adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and a forward collision warning system.

DRIVING THE 2017 VOLVO XC60

Volvo updated the model with all-wheel drive in 2016 and the addition has greatly improved the Swede’s drivability and handling. As one would expect, it’s a solid motorväg cruiser with excellent poise and minimal body roll but please don’t confuse it with a sports sedan.
