Etihad, Lufthansa Deepen Relationship with Catering and Maintenance Deals
The catering and maintenance contracts are worth as much as €200 million ($216 million) to Lufthansa. The German flag carrier will provide catering services to Etihad in 16 cities across the globe as well as maintenance, repair, and overhaul services for Etihad Airways and its airline equity partners, which include Lufthansa competitor Air Berlin.
But the two airlines have bigger plans as well.
“This partnership is the platform for a much wider strategic collaboration between our two organisations,” said James Hogan, Etihad’s CEO, hinting at a possible joint venture.
The two airlines’ codeshares go into effect today. Lufthansa is placing its code on Etihad’s twice-daily flights between Abu Dhabi and Frankfurt, as well as its twice-daily flights between Abu Dhabi and Munich, while Etihad will place its code on Lufthansa-operated flights between Frankfurt and both Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Bogota, Colombia.
As part of the relationship, Etihad will move its operations at Lufthansa hubs in Frankfurt from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 and in Munich from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 to facilitate passenger connections and cooperation between the two carriers.
